WOW11: March 2025
Between 25 and 30 March 2025, I had the pleasure of attending WOW 11 (Wolverhampton Observing Week) at the tranquil Brow Farm campsite near Shrewsbury. Nestled in the shadow of the Long Mynd hills and offering excellent dark skies, this spot proved to be an ideal base for astronomy, walking, and relaxation.
A Sky Full of Stars
We were blessed with several clear nights during the week—an absolute treat for any stargazer. With minimal light pollution, the skies over Brow Farm were simply breathtaking. Telescopes and binoculars came out in force each evening as we gathered on the field, bundling up against the chill, eyes turned skyward.
One of the standout highlights was observing the Beehive Cluster (M44) in Cancer. This stunning open cluster, sparkling like diamonds scattered on velvet, was perfectly placed for viewing after dusk. We also took in the majesty of Orion, still prominent in the early evenings, with M42 (Orion’s Nebula) glowing faintly but beautifully through the eyepiece.
Later in the evenings, Leo rose high with Regulus marking its heart, and we caught a glimpse of galaxies like M65 and M66—a real treat through the larger scopes. A few of us also managed to spot Saturn just before dawn on the final day, its rings crisp and surreal.
Curry, Chats, and Camaraderie
Saturday night was a culinary and social highlight, thanks to a fantastic curry night shared by the group. It was more than just a meal—it was a warm gathering of like-minded enthusiasts exchanging stories, sharing observing tips, and enjoying some well-earned comfort food. The laughter, conversation, and aroma of spice made it a memorable evening.
Exploring the Long Mynd
Daylight hours were just as enjoyable, especially with the Long Mynd so close at hand. We took several walks across its rolling hills, with panoramic views stretching across Shropshire and into Wales. The spring air was fresh, and the landscape, with its heather and winding tracks, was invigorating after long nights under the stars.
On one afternoon, we made our way to The Bridges pub, a cozy and welcoming spot tucked in the hills. A pint by the fire and hearty pub grub made it the perfect rest stop after a hike.
A Week to Remember
WOW 11 2025 was a truly unforgettable week: a mix of astronomy, fresh air, friendly company, and quiet time under the stars. Whether it was discovering celestial wonders through a telescope, hiking the ridge of the Long Mynd, or bonding over curry and conversation, every day offered something special.
As I packed up on the final morning, already planning to return, I looked back at Brow Farm with a smile. Nights like those—and skies like that—don’t come often.
