SUMMARY:Alex Binks - Young Stars in our Backyard
DESCRIPTION:Age is a vital property to get right in astronomy\, but it’s really tricky! \n\n\n\nCorrectly estimating the age of a star (or a cluster of stars) means we can test our understanding of the sequence of events throughout a star’s life. On larger scales this leads to clues about the evolution and ecology of our Galaxy (and the Local Universe)\, whereas on smaller scales this feeds into our narrative about how planets outside our Solar System evolve and helps us measure physical quantities in our search for an Earth 2.0. \n\n\n\nIt’s hard work though\, and the road to accurate stellar ages is littered with red herrings\, imposters and uncertainties! \n\n\n\nIn this talk I’ll try and share with you some of the main methods used in estimating stellar ages\, how precise we think each method is (which itself is hotly debated)\, how the enormous troves of new data in the past few years is helping us\, and how we could improve age estimations in the future.

SUMMARY:Andy Briggs - How to photograph a Black Hole: the Story of the Event Horizon Telescope
DESCRIPTION:FREE PUBLIC TALK \n\n\n\nIn 2019\, humanity’s first image of a black hole was revealed to the world. Join Andy Briggs as he reveals exactly how the image was acquired by the Event Horizon Telescope\, and the technological challenges involved in producing what is undoubtedly one of the most iconic scientific images of all time. \n\n\n\nAndy Briggs has spent the past 30 years communicating astronomy\, astrophysics and information technology to people. You can hear his weekly astronomy and space news update\, on Mondays\, on the global internet radio channel AstroRadio\, where he also contributes to other programmes. He has been active in many astronomy societies in the UK and is a frequent contributor to Astronomy Ireland magazine. Andy also lectures regularly on astrophysics-related themes such as gravitational waves and black holes. He lives in Catalonia\, Spain\, with his daughter. \n\n\n\nWatch the talk live on YouTube

SUMMARY:Paul Money - Why Are There No Green Stars?
DESCRIPTION:We often look up at the night sky and our first impression is one of white stars until we realise a few are actually coloured. Astro images clearly show coloured stars but one things stands out as being absent: Green stars. \n\n\n\nIn this talk Paul takes a look at how we see colour\, why we see colour and explores why there are actually no green stars yet we all know the colours of the rainbow!

SUMMARY:Paul Fellows - Children of Another Sun
DESCRIPTION:It is only in the last twenty years that we have been able to prove that the Sun is not unique in having a family of planets. This talk takes up the story of the discovery of planets beyond the solar system and described how we have gone about tracking down planets orbiting other stars (One of which Paul has found himself). How many planets are there out there? What are they like? How do we know? Then taking things a little further this talk brings the story of the search for life bang up to date with the latest thinking on this fascinating topic. \n\n\n\nAbout me: Having built his first telescope aged 14 and experiencing the “wow” moment of seeing the rings of Saturn for the first time\, he has been stargazing for some 40 years and has his own private observatory where he images the sky\, taking pictures of galaxies\, clusters\, nebulae and planets. Many of his own images will appear in his talks. \n\n\n\n((In normal times)) Paul co-presents the public observing evenings at the University of Cambridge\, leading the live outdoor shows every week or giving indoor presentations when the clouds roll in! Either way these attract audiences of 200+ on a regular basis and are aimed to appeal to people of all levels from the complete beginner who wants to know where to start\, yet hopefully adding something even for the more knowledgeable. \n\n\n\nPaul holds a Master’s degree in natural sciences and a post-graduate diploma in computer science from the University of Cambridge\, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology\, A Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society\, and chairman of the Cambridge Astronomical Association.

SUMMARY:Paul Pope Lecture: Chris Lintott - The Crowd and the Cosmos
DESCRIPTION:Wolverhampton Astronomical Society is proud to present it’s annual free public talk\, the Paul Pope Lecture. \n\n\n\nThis year we are delighted to welcome Chris Lintott\, co-presenter of the BBC’s Sky at Night program to talk to us about The Crowd and the Cosmos. \n\n\n\nAstronomer Chris Lintott explains how you could help astronomers sort through galaxies\, explore the surface of Mars\, or even discover a planet. This is the story of the Zooniverse\, which has enlisted more than two million people in the search for cosmic truth. Using stories drawn from contemporary research\, this talk describes their discoveries – including the most mysterious star in the Milky Way – and argues that the search for the truly unusual could rely on you. The talk includes at least one picture of penguins. \n\n\n\nOrder a personalised signed copy of The Crowd & The Cosmos

SUMMARY:Mark Gibbons - Black Holes
DESCRIPTION:From being theoretical curiosities predicted by mathematics\, to objects we now have direct observational evidence of: black holes. They have a surprisingly wide-ranging effect on the structures we see in the Universe. We have some idea about what goes on inside a black hole\, and a better idea what goes on around one. This talk examines how we first thought of black holes\, what effects they have and how they evolve.

SUMMARY:Nicholas Booth - Mars: The Clearest View
DESCRIPTION:With three new missions heading to Mars\, Nicholas Booth will discuss our changing perceptions of the Red Planet. For the first time in forty years\, NASA will be looking directly towards life – and Nick will tell the story of how people have thought they have discovered life in recent years. He will set the scene for the next great space spectacular – the return of samples of Mars within a decade. Having reported the subject for many years\, Nick will also tell some lesser known stories about this great scientific quest of our age – obtaining our clearest view of Mars \n\n\n\nNICHOLAS BOOTH is a writer and broadcaster. He started his career with a book about Mars in 1988 and his latest – co-authored with the Canadian science writer Elizabeth Howell – is “The Search For Life On Mars” based on their joint reporting over the last thirty years. They tweet as @search_mars \n\n\n\nYou can watch this talk for free on YouTube: \n\n\n\nhttps://youtu.be/lZ1Ua06cB04
