SUMMARY:Professor Chris Lintott - Our Accidental Universe
DESCRIPTION:Professor Chris Lintott\, astrophysicist\, author and broadcaster presents this years lecture held in memorial of former Wolvas president Paul Pope. \n\n\n\nExploring a cosmos as vast as ours is bound to result in a few surprises. In this talk\, Chris Lintott (BBC Sky at Night/University of Oxford) explains how astronomers stumble across their discoveries. From the rich diversity of worlds in our Solar System to the edge of the observable universe\, he will explain what we know about the cosmos is usually the result of happenstance. Along the way\, we get a whistle-stop tour of cutting edge science and encounter sometimes profound\, sometimes amusing but always thought-provoking stories from astronomy’s past. There will also be at least one picture of penguins. \n\n\n\nTo attend this event in person you will require a FREE ticket\, 1 per person attending: \n\n\n\nClick here to book your FREE tickets using Ticket Tailor \n\n\n\nNote: This event is also live streamed over Zoom for Society Members\, no ticket is needed for this. \n\n\n\nThe talk will be in the Millennium City Building Theatre (MC001).Access is via the Rosalind Franklin Building entranceStafford StreetWolverhamptonWV1 1LY

SUMMARY:Christine Rodrigue\, Ph.D - Geography of Mars
DESCRIPTION:The Geography of Mars\, creating a Mental Map of Martian Landscapes. Mental maps are nested constructs\, with smaller areas fitting into larger ones\, each level filling in with details as people study maps\, travel around\, read\, watch movies and shows\, and hear news.  Geographers are fascinated by these nested mental structures and there’s a long cottage industry in systematizing such pedagogical schemes for the whole planet\, often called the “orders of relief.” \n\n\n\nThe talk will include a bit about how I wound up on Mars from a career in hazards and biogeography.  NASA had gotten wind of one of my hazards projects\, the use of the then-new Internet to organize a massive protest against the launch of the Cassini-Huygens mission to the Saturnian system (plutonium on board).  In 2001\, they invited me to present this to five of their centres and then asked if I would follow the similar controversies boiling up against the planned Mars Sample Return Lander. I agreed and started studying Mars to acquire the background for that project.

SUMMARY:John Thatcher - The James Webb Space Telescope At Work
DESCRIPTION:The talk will provide a basic understanding of JWST and why it looks the way it does along with a look at some of the results obtained during the first year of science observations. \n\n\n\nJohn retired in May 2013 after over 30 years working in the space industry\, mainly involved in spacecraft engineering and project management. He began his career as an aerothermodynamicist at Rolls-Royce Aero Engines in Derby.  He also worked briefly in the nuclear power industry before joining what was then British Aerospace at Stevenage working on communication satellites.  \n\n\n\nDuring his career ‘in space’ he has been fortunate to have worked on most aspects of spacecraft engineering covering design\, development\, manufacture\, integration\, test\, launch and operations of communication and scientific missions\, including the industrial management of the Beagle 2 Mars lander project in its early years. For the last decade at work John was the European Consortium Project Manager for the Mid-Infrared Instrument on the James Webb Space Telescope managing it through to delivery to NASA in 2012 and still in contact with the team operating the instrument.

SUMMARY:Damian Hardwick - Sir Bernard Lovell & His Telescope
DESCRIPTION:During his time as director of Jodrell Bank\, Sir Bernhard Lovell turned a patch of Cheshire countryside into one of the worlds leading radio observatories. \n\n\n\nIn this talk we take a look at the origins and scientific career of a man described as the great pioneer of radio astronomy. He is most memorable for constructing the telescope that is named after him\, which is one of the great icons of twentieth century technology\, and a marvel of modern engineering.

SUMMARY:Steve Tonkin - Right Light At Night
DESCRIPTION:Light Pollution was first identified as a problem by astronomers\, but its consequences reach far wider. It is now widely recognised that artificial light at night\, especially bright white light\, can have profoundly negative effects on human health\, and this is just the tip of an iceberg of harm. The effects on wildlife have been devastating\, leading directly to the death of millions of birds each year and being the major driver of the insect apocalypse (studies suggest that 40% of insects will be extinct within the next few decades).  \n\n\n\nThe solutions are at hand\, are simple to implement\, will have a net saving (of money\, energy use and carbon emissions) and will not compromise security or our ability to safely work\, travel and play at night. We need to act now before it is too late.

SUMMARY:Paul Fellows - Quark Stars and Strange Matter
DESCRIPTION:The usual story told of the end stage of giant stars is that they either finish up as a neutron star or collapse completely to a black hole. However\, in this talk Paul looks at the possibility for other extremely exotic forms of matter which may add to the picture – and how the latest observations seem to back up these ideas. \n\n\n\nPaul chairs the Cambridge Astronomical Association. He presents the open evenings at the University of Cambridge and is frequently invited as guest speaker by Cunard line on board the Queen Mary 2 and other ships.  \n\n\n\nGraduating from the University of Cambridge Master’s degrees in Natural Sciences a post-graduate degree in Computer Science\, he is an elected Fellow of both the Royal Astronomical Society and the Institute of Engineering and Technology. Twice a winner of the Queen’s award for Technology he was recently presented a lifetime innovation award by Emmanuel College Cambridge.  \n\n\n\nHis talks are aimed to appeal to people of all levels from the complete beginner who wants to know where to start\, yet hopefully adding something even for the more knowledgeable

SUMMARY:Martin Griffiths - Detecting Life on Exoplanets
DESCRIPTION:Astronomers are moving closer and closer to detecting the signatures of life on other planets. with the advent of new technologies and the JWST we are on the threshold of exploring planetary atmospheres and detecting the basic signatures of living organisms. At present we do not know what sort of organisms they could be or if any intelligence is indicated but progress in this field is a daily occurrence. What exactly are exoplanets\, what detectors and experiments are we running and what are the prospects for detecting life outside of our Earth within the 21st Century?

SUMMARY:Richard Goodrich - Comet Madness
DESCRIPTION:In 1705\, Edmond Halley liberated humanity from the belief that comets were portents of doom; two centuries later\, when Halley’s Comet returned to its perihelion\, newspapers\, misguided theorists\, and shameless con men managed to reignite that fear. When astronomers announced that the earth would pass through the comet’s tail\, opportunists exploited human anxiety—often with fatal consequences.   \n\n\n\nJoin Dr. Richard J. Goodrich\, author of Comet Madness: How the 1910 Return of Halley’s Comet (almost) Destroyed Civilization\, for an entertaining lecture about the comet’s 1910 return and the reasons that many believed the earth would not survive this deadly encounter.

SUMMARY:AGM & Phil Barnard - Science Fact or Science Fiction
DESCRIPTION:“Trust me\, I’m a scientist!” Well we all make mistakes; perhaps through ignorance\, a desire to hold on to a cherished theory or when the imagination is allowed to run wild. Or occasionally to believe a charlatan\, whose only aim is to produce highly profitable bestselling books. This is a look at some of the mistakes to be found in the history of astronomy.
