SUMMARY:Martin Griffiths - Detecting Life on Exoplanets
DESCRIPTION:Astronomers are moving closer and closer to detecting the signatures of life on other planets. with the advent of new technologies and the JWST we are on the threshold of exploring planetary atmospheres and detecting the basic signatures of living organisms. At present we do not know what sort of organisms they could be or if any intelligence is indicated but progress in this field is a daily occurrence. What exactly are exoplanets\, what detectors and experiments are we running and what are the prospects for detecting life outside of our Earth within the 21st Century?

SUMMARY:Richard Goodrich - Comet Madness
DESCRIPTION:In 1705\, Edmond Halley liberated humanity from the belief that comets were portents of doom; two centuries later\, when Halley’s Comet returned to its perihelion\, newspapers\, misguided theorists\, and shameless con men managed to reignite that fear. When astronomers announced that the earth would pass through the comet’s tail\, opportunists exploited human anxiety—often with fatal consequences.   \n\n\n\nJoin Dr. Richard J. Goodrich\, author of Comet Madness: How the 1910 Return of Halley’s Comet (almost) Destroyed Civilization\, for an entertaining lecture about the comet’s 1910 return and the reasons that many believed the earth would not survive this deadly encounter.

SUMMARY:AGM & Phil Barnard - Science Fact or Science Fiction
DESCRIPTION:“Trust me\, I’m a scientist!” Well we all make mistakes; perhaps through ignorance\, a desire to hold on to a cherished theory or when the imagination is allowed to run wild. Or occasionally to believe a charlatan\, whose only aim is to produce highly profitable bestselling books. This is a look at some of the mistakes to be found in the history of astronomy.

SUMMARY:Martin Lunn - Astronomy in the Mediterranean
DESCRIPTION:Many great civilisations flourished in the ancient Mediterranean. This talk takes us on an astronomical journey to Egypt\, Greece\, Mesopotamia and the empires of Byzantium and Arabia. We will also visit Europe during the Renaissance. These were very varied civilisations\, each with their own interpretation of the night sky. Our modern view of the stars and constellations was shaped in this diverse part of the world\, and the study of the oldest of all the sciences is still being undertaken in this region today. This is the story of Astronomy in the Mediterranean.

SUMMARY:Mary McIntyre FRAS - A History of Women in Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:Mary McIntyre FRAS Mary is an Oxfordshire based amateur astronomer and astrophotographer who has had a life-long interest in Astronomy.Throughout history astronomy has been very male dominated. There have been many trailblazing women\, such as Caroline Herschel\, who have worked to change that\, but in addition there were countless women working in astronomy before Caroline. This talk tells their story and discusses some of the challenges women have faced historically and still face today.

SUMMARY:Dr Jonathan Smoker - Astronomy at the European Southern Observatory\, Chile
DESCRIPTION:A general introduction as to why we do astronomy and my personal story of how I became a professional astronomer working at the European Southern Observatory (ESO). We will talk a little bit about Chile and why it has become a worldwide centre for astronomical observations. A typical day’s work at Paranal Observatory (The Very Large Telescope) will be described as well as some scientific results from the last 20 years from Paranal\, La Silla and the Atacama Large MM/Sub-mm array (ALMA). Finally\, we’ll discuss what is coming next\, especially ESOs Extremely Large Telescope which in the next 5-10 years will become the largest optical telescope in the world. There won’t be any equations in the talk\, the idea is that you ask questions whenever you like and we have a nice hour or so talking about astronomy in the southern hemisphere! \n\n\n\nDr Jonathan Smoker is a staff astronomer at the Very Large Telescope\, Mount Paranal\, Chile\, operated by the European Southern Observatory. He is currently instrument scientist for OMEGACAM\, the wide-field imager on Paranal.

SUMMARY:Prof Don Pollacco - The PLATO Mission – The Habitable Zone Explorer
DESCRIPTION:Professor Don Pollacco (Warwick University) is the head of the Science Management branch of the PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) mission consortium\, scheduled for launch in 2024. The main goal of the mission is the detection of terrestrial planets at distances up to and including the habitable zone of bright\, Solar-like stars. The mission will also provide key information on the bulk characteristics (and therefore the habitability) of these planets.

SUMMARY:Gary Poyner - An Introduction to Variable Star Observing
DESCRIPTION:Observing Variable Stars is a fun\, rewarding and scientifically useful way to spend your time observing the night sky.  This talk assumes no prior knowledge of variable star observing\, and briefly describes the type of variable star you might encounter when starting out\, how to make the observation – either with the eye or electronic detector – and finishes with how our observations can be useful to science.

SUMMARY:Damian Hardwick - The Life of Albert Einstein
DESCRIPTION:Albert Einstein is one of the greatest physicists in history. But it is important to remember that although he had a brilliant mind he was still only human\, and throughout his life Einstein’s name is synonymous with the word genius. He had triumphs as well as many tribulations\, and tragedy to contend with during his lifetime. Although his theory of relativity gave him iconic status\, the political events of his lifetime had as big an influence as his scientific endeavours. We shall also see how the rise of Adolf Hitler\, and the extremely infamous Nuremberg laws\, inexorably changed the rest of his life and made him the personification of Jewish defiance to everything that Hitler stood for. He was also a pacifist\, and we will see how his famous letter to Roosevelt\, which led to the Manhattan project and a nuclear arms race in the post war years\, troubled his conscience.

SUMMARY:Paul Fellows - Fire and Ice: The volcanic worlds of the Solar System
DESCRIPTION:The exploration of the solar system has led to the discovery and study of volcanic processes on other worlds and in some very surprising places. What can this tell us about the formation of the planets and also about the prospects for the possibilities of life beyond Earth?
